I'm having the darnest time getting a good result on a transparent green finish on mahagony! the color of the wood is overpowering the green so I have to go too dark. looks good only in certain lighting. kindfa awefull in many other lighting conditions anyone know a way to lighten the wood so I don't have to fight this? I'm ready to strip this thing and start over !
Transparent green over brown is not going to look good. You could bleach it with dilute oxalic acid, peroxide, or a 2 part wood bleach. DO NOT used clorine bleach - it will yellow your wood, and then you'll have blue.
Might be worth using Mohawk bleachtone on the wood, then doing a green tinted clearcoat later on in the process. I had a guitar with a similar issue, just wound up living with the darkness. http://www.mohawkconsumerproducts.com/blog/2017/7/7/july-guitar-of-the-month/
