Looking For Some Help With Coil Splitting A Humbucker

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone with a better knowledge of wiring can help me with what I'd like to do.
I have a Gibson LP Special I want to mod by changing the neck pickup to a Humbucker/Single Coil using a push/pull POT. I just want the neck pickup to be split, and without making any mods to the body of the guitar. Hence, the push/pull POT.
From what I thought I understood, this should be a fairly easy process but I can't seem to find the article I had been reading about the process. I think this is often described as a Jimmy Page mod?

I think this is what I need to do. Wires don't match colours (pickup is a Gibson 500), so I guess I'll have to try, try again. Hopefully I won't burn out anything, or fry myself when I plug in?

From that page, you want the coil cut switch. The switch they show the wiring for will be on the back of the push-pull pot. If your wires aren't the standard colors, you want to figure out which ones correspond. You want to cut the coil that is further from the fingerboard. What the colors for the wiring on your pickup?

Stew-Mac made a complete mess of their site, from what I see. I've got a degree in electronics, and I've taught. While engineers get called out for being out of touch, techs can mess things up pretty good, too. If you have any further questions, post them. A picture of the pickup, showing the wiring would help. The coil 'tap' actually just shorts circuits one coil to ground. I'm surprised the parts vendors (especially pickup vendors) do such a lousy job at diagramming.
