Hey guys, I just received an email from someone who said they have Cuban Mahogany in Key Largo Florida. 2000 bd. ft. of old growth, straight grained and figured wood. 4/4, 5/4,6/4,8/4, and 12/4. Up to 22" wide up to 96" long.

Anyone have use for such wood? If interested, let me know and I'll hook you up with the guy.

Update: Please see Post #12 below for photos and contact details.

I would be interested only if it is legal wood .
Trade in this wood has been banned since the 50's unless it meets specific parameters .
I have a tall case clock built from this wood . It is beautiful mahogany .
Is any of it quarter sawn ?
It is native to Florida , by the way .
Please connect me , if you will .

He did mention that he recycles storm salvaged wood and that's how he obtained Cuban mahogany. I'll see if I get can more info from him.

Cuban or true genuine mahogany is native to southern Florida, otterhound. The only way it can be harvested legally is if it comes from storm damaged trees or possibly something that poses a hazard to property / humans, etc.

I have a piece of 6/4 and can say this much: it is heavy and has a distinct ring to it when tapped. Not like I know wtf I am doing with a tap tone but this is very pleasant sounding. Got a piece set aside for a neck and it rings even better than some of the rosewood on hand. It also has very different color compared to the African or Honduran species. Those tend to be reddish when splashed with a thinner or spirits while the Cuban stuff is golden. At least mine is. If the prices are not prohibitive you guys should consider it. It is prized by some of the acoustic builders for a reason.

Yes , blow downs are one of the legal ways to harvest .
Acoustic guitars is the reason that I asked about quarter sawn .
With it being domestic wood , it automatically get my attention .

    Additional info:

    - There are 4-5 large trees waiting and will be available (mill) in September
    - This is legal wood and Monroe County in FL is easing restrictions for over mature, precarious trees near homes, storm damage (Issac last year produced some)

Any other questions you guys want me to ask him?

    Just a few .
Are we going to be allowed direct contact at some point ?
How about some pictures of the trees ?
    Quantities and pricing .
Can I be present during the milling process or even earlier ?
I may come up with a few more .
    Thanks .

We had a customer at Collings have a dreadnought made out of Cuban mahogany that his grandfather harvested in the late 40s. It looked and sounded fantastic.
