I am building a bent topped J bass and the customer wants Macassar Ebony top . I am concerned with the top cracking when in the vacuum bag. Has anyone used a veneer conditioner/softener or even a fabric softener such as downey?

I used it once to bend guitar sides and they bent alright. Later I went ahead and bought Super Soft II and have been using it with success since. I guess I'm not familiar with a bent top jazz bass. Do you mean an acoustic bass?

No this was on a electric Jazz bass with a bent top. Through our regular process of wetting and steaming we were able to bend the top without much difficulty. This was probably due to the minimal top thickness.
