I'm looking to get an apprenticeship and wanted to see if anyone that has been an apprentice or runs a shop could give any advice on getting one?

In this country, your best bet may be taking some classes offered by several different Luthiers around the country. Check with the Guild of American Luthiers. http://www.luth.org/resources/schools.html

If you have little or no woodworking experience, a course in woodworking or furniture making from a community college or Vo-Tech school to learn woodworking skills and to learn to safely operate hand and power tools would be very useful. It could keep you from losing a few fingers and will give you a solid foundation upon which to build your guitar making.
