The only problem with gluing it is that it won't come back through the hole.
I've threaded one before and made a tip that screwed on. They make little rubber colored condoms to go over those... Not sure what they're really...

I use a handmade mitre box, you'll be fine.
I keep 260lbs worth of plate weights and another 50 in soft clay just for big surface clamping jobs. Works great.
